It was a bright sunny day on Sunday, Oct. 27, perfect for the Sechelt Legion’s First Responders Appreciation Barbecue.

The Legion’s mission is to serve veterans (including those currently serving in the military and the RCMP) and their families, to promote remembrance and to serve our communities and our country. In honour of that mission, Legion Branch 140 invited the RCMP, Ambulance Service, firehalls from Sechelt, Halfmoon Bay and Roberts Creek, the Sunshine Coast Ground Search and Rescue (SAR), Royal Canadian Marine SAR Station 12 Halfmoon Bay along with their families to the event.

As first vice-president Bill McLean said, “Branch 140 has some great volunteers who put in countless hours to generate charity funds so that we can give back to the community, and today, we have donations for Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay fire halls, Royal Canadian Marine SAR Station 12 and Sunshine Coast SAR.”

The first responders and their families enjoyed the food and the camaraderie. In addition to burgers and beverages, each first responder received promotional goods from Molson Coors, a key sponsor of the event.

The Legion’s mandate is made possible through the various gaming activities the branch hosts. Its efforts wouldn’t be possible without volunteers providing their time each week. The branch strives to direct 90 per cent of charitable funds received to local organizations, like the first responder organizations, that provide much needed services to the community.

Legion president Jessie August noted that “this event was a great way to recognize the amazing people who give so freely of their time to community service and we are looking forward to hosting more events and developing strategic alliances that will serve to increase awareness of local service organizations.”
