Dedicated volunteers and hand-cut doughnuts

Hi everyone! Wow, what a week! After we enjoyed such nice weather to close off August and begin September, it’s amazing how conditions can change. This horrible smoke may be around for a while so stay safe and limit time spent outdoors. My heart goes out to all that have been affected by these wildfires; all the lives, property and forests lost, so very sad.

Although the Halfmoon Bay branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary is not holding its regular meetings during this time, volunteers are continuing to work in the Thrift Store, Loan Cupboard and Gift Store. Moria from the Auxiliary advised that “they are also helping out with birthday celebrations for Shorncliffe Care Home, Totem Lodge and Two South.” She said that “volunteers will soon be accessing library books for the residents. Many of the members of the Auxiliary have joined the Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild and a group, led by Christine Fearn, are sewing masks for the community. Our combined goal is to sew 2,400 masks.” How wonderful is that? Thank-you to all these dedicated and caring people doing their best to make a difference in the community and beyond.

Continuing with highlighting home-based local businesses in Halfmoon Bay, The Dough Geek is another business making many people happy with her awesome hand-rolled and hand-cut doughnuts. Jessica said, “I have been baking since I was little, mostly with my grandma.” During the last two years, she has been perfecting recipes and techniques and opened for business six months ago. “I use recipes that my grandma has shared with me and my doughnuts are always freshly made. I like to be unique and hope to excite people’s taste buds with a variety of different flavours and toppings.” Jessica began this creative endeavour because it fuels her soul and she really enjoys working with her hands. Orders can be placed through The Dough Geek Facebook page or send her an email at thedoughgeek@gmail.com.

It may be a little early to announce this online book launch by our local artist and writer, Ruth Rodgers, but I’m pretty excited, so sharing with you now. (I read her first book and loved it so can’t wait for the sequel.) Ruth retired from a long career in Ontario college education in 2013 and moved to Halfmoon Bay. Since that time, she has devoted herself to her dual interests of painting and writing. Her first historical fiction novel, Those Who Wander, followed the life of Clara Lyell, Halfmoon Bay’s first white settler from 1895 to 1923. Ruth will be launching her new book, Those Who Stay, via an online book launch meeting using Zoom on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 3 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. Those Who Stay follows the characters into the 1940s. This novel takes place between 1923 and 1946 in Pender Harbour and the Fraser Valley. The presentation will include a reading and slide show by Ruth along with time to answer any questions. Books can be purchased from the author (rodgers.ruth@gmail.com) as well as at Talewind Books in Sechelt for $25. If you would like to attend the online book launch, please contact Emily Kammerle at ekammerle@hotmail.com to register.

Have your “Say at the Bay,” please contact me before 5 p.m. on Mondays. cindy.kisser@telus.net.
