Commemorative artwork underway

Dean Schutz

Artist Dean Schutz has been working on a mural commissioned by the District of Sechelt to commemorate both the 30th anniversary of Sechelt becoming a district and the 30th anniversary of the Sechelt (shíshálh) Nation attaining self-governance.

The commemorative artwork on the outside of the washroom facility at Rotary Friendship Park is based on George Seurat’s 1886 painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Schutz’s work, titled Sunday Afternoon on Sechelt’s Grand Shore, is meant to be a historical and whimsical look at familiar Sechelt characters through the ages.

Schutz hopes to be done the four-sided mural, which will also include maps of the area, by mid-August. A public ceremony will be held to officially unveil the art piece.
