Spooktober already?

This week marks my 52nd week at the helm of this corner of our weekly paper and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to craft my view of our small part of the world to share with you. It has been an interesting year to say the least, filled with a fair bit of uncertainty but with a steadfastness of community that is the Creek that I have come to love. Keep doing what you do, Gumboot Nation! From our mushroom-dotted mountain to our driftwood-clogged beaches, I see you making this place a better place! I want to share your stories with our neighbours... If you don’t share them, I will have to start writing about my family again and who knows how that will turn out?

Sometimes the news I share is sad. After 15 years of teaching world-class craftsmanship at their most beautiful of schools, Robert and Yvonne will be closing the Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking at the end of their fall session. The Heart of the Creek will feel the loss.

The Vancouver men’s community known as the Samurai Brotherhood is expanding to the Sunshine Coast. James Bell and Ben Goresky will be hosting A Free Intro Evening, Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7-9 p.m. They follow 14 points of what they call “the Code of the Conscious Warrior.” I looked it up and although I subscribe to the Groucho Marx school of club membership, I see value in their ideas. Poor attendance to the Yoko Ono tribute band performance has not passed without notice this week... It could have been due to the air quality, the rain, or maybe because the promotion was whispered to a pachinko ball ... but who knows?

At the #219, count on sunshine with The Hook on Friday, Organics on Saturday and Blue Line Trio on Sunday. For the remainder of October, “weather permitting” is the word on shows, check their FB and website Thursday for weekend confirmations.

After seven long months, a new beginning for 5Rhythms Classes. Starting Oct. 7, dancing at the Roberts Creek Hall is on again for Wednesday evenings, 7-8:30 p.m. Classes are preregistration only, with 30 tickets available for each one (existing class pass will work). Email to: [email protected] to register. Feeling sick? Been outside Canada or have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days? Do not come to class! Masks in common areas recommended, but not required while dancing. Doors may be open to increase ventilation, so an extra layer may help. Bring your own water bottle to class.

Meditation, a practice where techniques like focusing the mind through thought or activity builds attention and awareness to achieve mental clarity, and an emotionally calm state. Janine Pilmer offers to guide you through Meditation Wednesdays here in Roberts Creek. Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m, for beginners and experienced meditators. Book at [email protected]. $15 drop-in, $50 for four classes, or $100 for 10 classes.
