Roberts Creek: The Creek we love

Occasionally I come across artful little window cabinet / birdhouse looking bookshelf things. Cute. The RCCA will soon offer a Little Free Library at the Roberts Creek Hall.

The Roberts Creek Farmgate Market celebrated Canada Day with about a dozen vendors setting up in the Roberts Creek Hall parking lot. The Market is open every Wednesday, 1:30 to 6 p.m., with health regulations in practice. Pictured are Bjorn Biggs and Ashley Boghean from the Little Red Wagon Farm in Roberts Creek.

Occasionally I come across artful little window cabinet / birdhouse looking bookshelf things. Cute. The RCCA will soon offer a Little Free Library at the Roberts Creek Hall. The talented Robert Van Norman of the Inside Passage Woodworking School has generously offered to build it. They need 20 board feet of wood for the project, preferably yellow cedar, so if you have wood to donate, contact: vicepresident@robertscreekcommunity.ca

July 4th at the little Legion was a grand reopening success story. Three-part harmony by Pamela, Grant and Fraser was a wonderful highlight for me – well done! With a capacity 50 people in attendance, it was certainly a tonic for the soul as many friends got to see each other in a social setting for the first time in a long time (no, the IGA doesn’t count!). Our time off for good behaviour continues every Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the front lawn (our new front porch?) but just a reminder, stay in your bubble and if you are a moist talker, mask up before you dive into that conversation. Open Friday 4 to 8 p.m. with Georgia Fats on stage. See you there!

Good news for fitness buffs – the Nomad Studio is opening with personal training sessions, Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One-on-one training, focusing on your personal goals, or bring a friend; there is enough room for two while maintaining physical distancing protocols. Anything from boxing and kickboxing to movement body weight in hour-long workouts. No experience needed and all fitness levels welcome. Reserved sessions only. $20/class, $150 for 10. Interested? Info and booking: coach@thenomadstudio.ca

Beth Hawthorn is a potter in Roberts Creek. Although not a completely uncommon thing to be, I find her work uncommonly pleasing. Her focus is on porcelain, black stoneware and terracotta clay, minimal in style with a neutral colour palette. She creates unique, small batch functional pieces, including tableware and pots. This weekend, July 11 and 12, she opens her small showroom at 1551 Lockyer Rd. to visitors and buyers from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. My breakfast is always a bit better out of one of her creations.

Roberts Creek, to me, has never really been about the place. It is a fantastic setting whose most important contribution is the people it has attracted. I am a relative newcomer, having been here only 20 years, but have had the honour to get to know some of the legends who have shaped this community simply by being themselves. Most of you may have heard, the Creek lost a legend in the person of Don Van Kleek on June 28. My day was always better for having a bit of conversation with this man and I was as excited as he was when he would show up behind the Café to demonstrate his tiny steam engine for any child or child at heart that would listen. He made this place more of what it is and will be missed. I am thankful our home draws in humans like Don.
