Roberts Creek: Is it Friday yet?

As we come into the last week before Christmas, which is basically the Friday afternoon of 2019, try to look busy, OK?

A terrific way to get busy and create a beautiful, unique gift is with Daniel Lencas at Eco-Freako, in the Heart of the Creek, Saturday, Dec. 14. This Roberts Creek glass, wood, and bamboo artist will be holding a kaleidoscope workshop from 1 to 4 p.m. In an hour or so you will have made your own kaleidoscope for just $25 complete!

Then get busy Saturday night with one of our local favourites, DJ Buzy B, gracing the stage of the Little Legion from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., spinning from her incredible collection of vinyl. With old school hip hop, R&B, reggae, funk and a little electro. It’s going to be a hot one. $8 members/$15 guests.

Decking the walls at the Gumboot Café until the end of December is cor•ru•gat•ed, the incomparable artworks of Steve Christian and Friends. Simple cardboard transformed into a jukebox, bows and inventive frames surrounding fantastic works. Even if you couldn’t get the very best in baked goods, it would still be worth a stop!

For only one night at the Café, Seattle-based singer-songwriter Deb Montgomery brings her 20 years of intimate, heart warming and soul piercing performance to share with the Gumboot Nation. Bring your friends and family and enjoy this magical event, Thursday Dec. 19. Doors at 7 p.m., music at 8 p.m. Montgomery says, “I think of song writing as my cave wall etchings: sometimes prison walls, sometimes dream walls, sometimes mysteries, and sometimes stories. Song writing for me has been a way through.”

A heads up for next Friday, Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m., Yoga by the Sea will host a charity event: Winter Solstice Sound Journey, the sounds and rhythms of a host of local musicians played unrehearsed and in the moment to celebrate the turning of the seasons. More info next week

I want to remind everyone to take a deep breath … now let it out. Be careful out there, it’s dark, and it’s rainy, and if you think you will have a puff or a drink, be ready with a ride home, OK? Unfortunately, the Responsible Ride service has closed shop (they would drive you and your car home!) so if anyone knows of a similar business, please drop me a line.

Also, buy locally, don’t give pets for Christmas, wrap with paper bags, comics or cloth, create new traditions, revive old ones, try not to overeat (but it’s OK if you do), and remember that everyone has their own story and they are the star.

Drop me a line at kellybacks@rocketmail.com to do a bit of town crying yerself. Talk to you next week!
