Halfmoon Bay: Sports Day memories

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Juneuary has been fabulous, right? If you think we’ve had more rain this month than last June, you are correct. Based on the Environment Canada site for Sechelt, the 2019 total rainfall for June was 26.

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week. Juneuary has been fabulous, right? If you think we’ve had more rain this month than last June, you are correct. Based on the Environment Canada site for Sechelt, the 2019 total rainfall for June was 26.3 mm; this year (so far), 38.7 mm has been measured. An amazing difference in recorded rainfall was May. In 2019, only 25 mm of rain was measured but in 2020, a whopping 54.1 mm was noted! Are our chances for summer drought still as high?

The month of June is by far my favourite. Long days, mild temperatures, everything green and growing. This time each year, memories of June when I was younger come to mind. Sports Day! I so loved Sports Day! Some years it was cold, wet and raining so we would have races under the covered play area or in the gym, certainly not the same as being outside. Other years, it was super hot, and the playing field was dry and dusty. Every race would leave a huge cloud of dust, which wound up in our mouths and eyes. I strived for that first-place blue ribbon but settled for any ribbon as I tried my best. I remember the boiled hot dogs served in a soggy bun with a restaurant napkin wrapped around it, orange fizzy stuff called pop which left your lips and mouth a bright orange colour, and a Wagon Wheel treat. Does anyone remember Wagon Wheels? A short time later, the school year would be over and then there was the excitement of summer holidays. Who would be around to spend time with, how hot was it going to be, how far and often could I ride my bike? Ah, such wonderful memories. June always smells like Sports Day to me.

A resident of Halfmoon Bay shared this story of a cabin on their property. Along Northwood Road, there is an old cabin where the original structure was built in the 1960s. In the ’70s and ’80s, the property was owned by an engineer and former Gibsons high school math teacher, Ron Davie. Ron did a renovation to the cabin in 1977, but for some unknown reason, he chose to live in an old aluminum trailer on the side of the property. For a time, Ron would invite friends over for tea in the cabin but later, tea was served in the trailer. It was so cold in the trailer that his friends chose to stand outside where it was much warmer. The current owner’s father noted that Ron would boast about not having to pay property taxes. Looking back on some records, it shows that the property tax owing for a senior was $133 so it could very well be that Ron was telling the truth. The trailer is gone now but the cabin still stands along with the funky foundation, crooked floors and misaligned walls. Thank you Richard A for sharing this story of a little cabin in Halfmoon Bay.

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA) logo contest has a winner! Gil Binne, a resident of Halfmoon Bay, submitted the winning design, which captured the essence of Halfmoon Bay. There were 41 logo designs submitted which were carefully viewed and voted on by a panel of judges. Terry Knight would like to thank everyone for their amazing creations and the judges for their time. The new logo can be seen on the HBCA website and Facebook page. Congratulations, Gil!
