The “Together Apart” Elphinstone Community Picnic in August was attended by fewer than 20 people, so there was no problem with social distancing! The ECA experimentally held it at the Maryanne West Park between Frank West Hall and Cedar Grove playground, which is after all the “hub” of Elphinstone. With no downtown (due to its proximity to Gibsons), this is where you’ll find the most Elphinstonians on any given day. Those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to safely socialize and some joined in a game of bocce organized by Vern and Marilyn Giesbrecht. The small grassy patch known as Maryanne West Park would certainly benefit from a bench or two.

The Woodcreek Park Neighbourhood Association has a grant from the Vancouver Foundation (the 2020 Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants program) to put on a neighbourhood bird/bat/bee house building workshop! The event will take place in Whispering Firs Park, on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m., with a backup date of Oct. 3 in case of bad weather. Claire Finlayson, who applied for the grant, says the Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project team will be there to help people build and put up the houses. She says, “I think we were approved because we have a strong social network in Woodcreek, along with an email list and a monthly newsletter delivered to every door.” What a great project! Contact Claire for more information at: [email protected]. Mandatory masks and physical distancing protocols will be in place.

The Elphinstone Community Association will hold its September meeting by Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Please request the code through the ECA email at: [email protected]. Guest speaker will be Ruth Simons, who has spoken to many groups on behalf of the Future of Howe Sound Society. Did you know that our beautiful Howe Sound is making a comeback from over-industrialized uses, so that once again marine life, including whales, are showing up in increasing numbers? How exciting that ancient glass sponge reefs have recently been discovered near Langdale. Ruth is the lead of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative and will talk about the exciting proposal to designate Howe Sound as Canada’s 19th UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. See more at https://www.howesoundbri.org/latest-news and be sure to join our meeting by Zoom.
