Gibsons Public Market has reopened this week, along with its newly renovated Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre, just in time for the 2nd Annual Rockfish Art Festival.

The fundraising event brought out the artist in young and old last year and can make for a fun family project. Pick up your blank, 60-cm (two-foot) plywood rockfish “canvas” (courtesy of Gibsons Building Supplies) for $25 each and have a go. Only 100 are available from the market reception desk July 3, 4, 5 and July 10, 11, 12.

Bring back your decorated piece between July 24 and 26 where it will be included in the Community Art Festival and Auction.

Gigi Hoeller

The impressive and distinctly West Coast art of painter Gigi Hoeller is on display for a limited time at her Halfmoon Bay gallery. The show of “old much-loved artworks” and “very interesting new pieces,” Hoeller tells us, is on only until 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. Her gallery is at 8000 Birch Way. Have a look online at gigibutterfly.com and you’ll see it’s worth the trip.

Art on display

The Kube in Upper Gibsons is displaying the playful and vibrant work of Victoria-based abstract painter Andrea Soos, Tuesdays through Sundays until July 26.

Among other local establishments that serve or sell products and also display the work of Coast artists, Gumboot Café has an exhibit by nature artist Lori Morris.

And the One O One shop on Cowrie Street in Sechelt has a show of photographs and drawings of wildlife by artist and photographer Sheila Weaver. It will be up until the end of August.

All galleries and shops are maintaining B.C. safe-distancing policies.

Sweet Sundays

The first of a summer-long series of Sunday afternoon outdoor concerts starts July 5 at the Secret Beach B&B just outside Gibsons. Deanna Knight, Simon Kendall and Michael Friedman are this week’s performers. Seating is limited for safety, which means no drop-ins. Call 604-362-1280 for tickets.

Concerts online

And for recorded musical performances anytime, along with frequent live-streamed shows, don’t forget the Sunshine Coast Quarantined Concert Series on Facebook. Local talents are adding posts daily, so there’s always something fresh to see and hear.

Space is limited in Art Beat but please let us know about your events at arts@coastreporter.net
