New exhibits by four artists opened this week at two of the Sunshine Coast’s bigger display venues. Gibsons Public Art Gallery (GPAG) is featuring oil paintings by Jennifer Ferries in an exhibit entitled Quiet Co-Existence: “a kind of dreamscape, a parallel universe,” exploring, “the notion of romance or magic in our age of the hard drive.” GPAG’s Eve Smart Gallery is exhibiting Sunshine Coast mixed-media artist Andrea Pratt’s exhibit, Corvidae. That refers to the bird family that includes crows, ravens and magpies. In watercolour, pen and ink, and oils, Pratt illustrates the birds’ “resourcefulness, cleverness and sense of humour.” There’s an opening reception for both artists on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.

In Sechelt, the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre’s Doris Crowston Gallery is showing the nature-inspired abstract works of Gibsons mixed-media artist Teryl Mullock and Vancouver’s Eve Gewurz. (See our feature story on page 35.) There will be an opening reception at the gallery on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.

Good Wood

Wood Expo is one of the biggest, one-day annual events held at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt. Last year it drew 1,200 people. It’s a testament to the Sunshine Coast’s abundance of wood artisans, who’ll be displaying works “from small to large; from land to water; from usable to wearable.” There will be 23 exhibitors, seven of them joining in for the first time. The Rotary Club of Sechelt will also be on site selling edibles as part of its ongoing fundraising effort. Saturday Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Creative opportunities

Artists, illustrators, and/or graphic designers who are Sunshine Coast residents are invited to submit original banner artwork for the District of Sechelt’s lampposts. The selected artist will be responsible for the creation of two designs that will be printed onto 80 banners. Production and installation costs, plus an artist’s fee of $1,000, will paid by the district. The deadline for applications is Oct. 7. There’s also an opportunity for photographers. Sechelt residents will be given priority, but all Coasters are eligible to have their photographic work displayed at the municipal hall’s second-floor lobby for a period of three months. Application details on both programs can be found on the District of Sechelt website under “What’s New.”

Chorus callout

If you love to sing, here might be a chance to do a lot more of it. Arbutus Sounds Chorus is a group of women from Langdale to Halfmoon Bay who sing in four-part a cappella harmony – and they’re looking for new members. The chorus is affiliated with Sweet Adelines International and can be seen and heard locally at many community events and special occasions. The ability to read music is not required. Practices are Tuesday evenings in Roberts Creek. If you’re interested, call Laura at 604-885-5447.

Full Moon Drum Circle

The full moon is on Friday the 13th this month and although the current weather forecast is calling for overcast skies, you can still celebrate the occasion at a Full Moon Rising Drum Circle at Sargeant Bay Provincial Park in Halfmoon Bay. “All drums, ages and experience welcome, even if you don’t have a drum.” 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Coffee House, Brew House

The Pender Harbour School of Music holds its monthly Friday night Coffee House on Sept. 13. Live local artists perform, with a different lineup each month. Sip coffee or tea and munch on sweet treats while you enjoy the show. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., $10.

On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14, Persephone Brewing just outside Gibsons is featuring covers and originals played by Charlotte Wrinch. From 2 to 4 p.m.

Warland reads and chats

The Gibsons Public Library presents Vancouver-based writer and manuscript consultant Betsy Warland, author of 12 books of poetry, creative nonfiction, and lyric prose. “Warland has been working intensively with emerging writers and authors for the past 35 years.” Saturday, Sept. 14, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Laughs at the Legion

Singer, comedian, guitarist and impressionist John A. White brings his Crazy Aussie Comedy Show to the Gibsons Legion on Saturday, Sept. 14. 8 p.m. Members $10, non-members $15.
