Hauptman, Gough crowned Canadian champs

Kimberley's Brendan Hauptman continued his strong start to the season by winning the Fast Track Capital Canadian Luge Championships at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Friday (Oct. 29).

It's only the 23-year-old's second year of competition, but that didn't stop Hauptman from capturing the title with a two-run time of one minute, 32.621 seconds.

Calgary-based slider Sam Edney, coming off a seventh-place finish in the 2010 Olympics, came second at 1:32.778, while Jeff Christie was third at 1:33.000.

In women's competition, Alex Gough was crowned the national champ with her time of 1:36.396. Joining her on the podium were Arianne Jones (1:37.057) and Kim McRae (1:37.512).

Olympians Justin Snith and Tristan Walker claimed the doubles title while clocking in at 1:30.589.

The event is one of a few being used to help determine the Canadian World Cup team, which gets its schedule underway in Austria on Nov. 27.
