When it comes to beauty, there’s nowhere more innovative than South Korea, the home of snail serums, sheet masks and cushion foundations. “It’s famous for trends and technology – really a world leader,” says South Korean Betty Han, who trained as a nail and lash technician in South Korea before moving to Canada 13 years ago and undertaking more training.

Previously living in Whistler, she’s now bringing all her beauty know-how to Squamish with her new salon, Bettynailash, which offers manicures, pedicures, gel and acrylic nails, nail art, and lash extensions.

Squamish may not be a beauty world leader – yet – but Han says there are plenty of trendy women who are looking for her services. She studies trends and new techniques daily in order to meet their needs. “I compete internationally in nail and lash competitions in the UK, China, Canada and South Korea, and also attend shows and conferences,” she says. “It’s extremely important to me that I stay up to date and can answer every question my clients might have.”

The West Coast element comes in the toxin-free products that Han uses. “Squamish is a healthy community and customers want to know that I’m using healthy products, from polishes and glues to lotions,” says Han. “A lot of my customers are young mums who bring their babies with them, and I myself spend 10 hours a day, so I want fresh air all the time. I want to make sure the atmosphere in my salon is as clean and fresh as a forest.”

Hygiene is another important health concern for many nail salons, and Han considers it fundamental. “We have dry pedicure stations and one-time-use tools. We do everything to ensure the highest possible hygiene standards and eliminate contamination,” she says.

Han says her experience working in both Canada and Korea is what puts her ahead of the competition. “I’m aware of all the latest trends, and can also tailor my work to different face shapes and nail types, because I have experience of working with clients from all over the world,” she says. “I’m so excited to bring all this to the vibrant, growing community of Squamish.”
