An environmental building company that has set down roots in Squamish is expanding with three manufacturing plants across North America.

Nexii Building Solutions Inc. announced on July 16 that it will be building plants in Ontario, Alberta and Pennsylvania.

The company says this will be a $75-million investment.

Currently, the company has one fully operational plant in Moose Jaw, Sask., with its second production facility in Squamish under construction.

Nexii specializes in building processes and materials that it says will greatly reduce the environmental footprint of construction.

Among its selling points is a substance it calls Nexiite, which the company says allows buildings to be made with a greatly reduced amount of concrete.

Nexii also made headlines after bringing former Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson on as an executive.

The company’s CEO, Stephen Sidwell, spoke of the importance of investing in new technologies in a news release issued on July 16.

"For North America to rebuild sustainably and achieve a green economic recovery, every industry needs to innovate and invest in new technologies,” said Sidwell.

“Buildings and construction together is the top contributor to global climate pollution, and Nexii has the potential to curb the environmental impacts created by our buildings. Our goal is to aggressively scale Nexii, so that we can live up to our company mission to build a vibrant future for people and the planet."
