Despite the financial wallop of COVID-19, most homeowners in Squamish are paying their taxes.

The District's chief financial officer Heather Boxrud told The Chief that the District received 68% of property tax payments by the July 2 deadline, compared with about 90% of payments by the due date in a typical year.

"This is not unexpected, however, due to the adjustment in the penalty schedule this year," Boxrud said.

As part of the District's response to the pandemic, the municipality's penalty schedule for late property tax payments was adjusted to provide some relief to those facing financial hardship.

Homeowners now have until Sept. 30 to pay any outstanding taxes without penalty.

As of late July, property tax payments had increased to 76% and the District expects to reach close to 90% by the Oct. 1 penalty date.
