Some Squamish residents are putting together a garage sale fundraiser to help a man with PTSD get money for a service dog.

Rhonda Holmes is hoping this sale will raise money to help Mike Underwood, who has been battling the condition since 2013.

At the time, he was working as the head of security for a private security company with a hotel chain in Vancouver.

Being in that job meant that he had to deal with many challenging issues.

This included fatalities — everything from seniors dying naturally to suicides. He dealt with domestic assaults, fires, gang violence, and more.

Functioning with PTSD is a great challenge, and a service dog can make a significant difference.

However, a trained dog costs about $25,000, making it rather hard to afford.

To do her part, Holmes is holding a community garage sale fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It’ll be in Valleycliffe at 38180 West Way Ave., in unit B3.

Holmes said it’s going to be socially distanced, with sanitizer provided. People will be asked to wear a mask.

She said people can expect to find lots of household items like vacuums and bikes, as well as skis boots, clothing for kids and more.
