The students of Jamie Mowbray's Grade 5/6 class at Brackendale Elementary School have been busy with a project of global proportion: studying climate action.
Not only have these young students been studying the subject, they've been making their own impact. This school year, they joined the September climate action strikes in Squamish — making signs and taking public transportation to the march. Several Brackendale Elementary students also spoke at the event. Their projects were inspired in part by teenage climate action activist Greta Thunberg.
The students also hosted a bake sale, and went from classroom to classroom sharing their knowledge of climate change with fellow students. The proceeds of the fundraiser went to a local initiative chosen by the students — the Squamish River Watershed Society.
Then, the students made cut-out footprints that proclaimed the steps they would take to mitigate their own climate impacts, including showering less. Next, the class is asking all Brackendale Elementary students to recycle their candy wrappers from Halloween. The students are contacting candy companies to ask them to make their packaging more environmentally friendly.
The school district board trustees, who three of the students presented to at the Nov. 13 public meeting, said they were impressed by the efforts of the students.
