The besieged Prince George Spruce Kings boarded the ferry in Nanaimo Sunday likely feeling a sense of relief.
After a gut-wrenching 6-1 loss a few hours earlier in Duncan to the Cowichan Valley Capitals, the Kings were almost certainly glad to have their latest B.C. Hockey League roadtrip behind them.
The Capitals feasted on 18-year-old rookie goalie Jack McGovern, making his fourth career BCHL start, and scored six goals on 18 shots before McGovern was replaced by Jett Alexander.
The goalie swap came with 6:42 left in the second period, after Zach Brooks scored the sixth goal for the Caps. The 20-year-old Alexander was perfect the rest of the game, stopping all 25 shots he faced.
Luc Wilson collected a natural hat trick with the first three goals of the game and also drew an assist, playing in front of a hometown crowd of 756 in Duncan.
Olivier Gauthier, Matthew Crasa and Zach Brooks also scored for the Capitals. Nolan Welsh, 2:26 into the second period, was the lone Spruce King shooter to beat goalie Zach Borgiel. Primo Self picked up three assists.
Cowichan outshot the Kings 43-22.
The Spruce Kings, 2-1 winners Saturday in Victoria, started their trip with a 4-1 loss in Powell River.
Sunday's loss dropped their record to 6-9-2-1, and they remain fourth in the Mainland Division, one point behind the third-place Langley Rivermen. The Mike Vandekamp-coached Capitals improved to 11-7-1-1 and they're tied for first place in the Island Division with Nanaimo, each with 24 points.
The Spruce Kings are back on home ice at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena Friday and Saturday when they host Langley.
