Two exhibits that focus on indigenous languages had their ceremonial openings on Saturday evening at The Exploration Place.
First was the new in-house exhibit titled, Mary Gouchie: Hubodulh’eh. This new exhibit showcases the Lheidli T’enneh Elder’s commitment to the preservation and revitalization of her language. Gouchie believed that preserving the Lheidli T’enneh culture starts with language revitalization and she was instrumental in the recovery and documentation of the written and spoken Lheidli T’enneh dialect of Dakelh.
Also opening on Saturday was a traveling exhibit titled, Our Living Languages: First Peoples’ Voices in B.C. This exhibit features interactive stations, video and audio from the Royal BC Museum and First Peoples' Cultural Council. Our Living Languages showcases the efforts of First Nations communities throughout the province to help 34 different languages survive and flourish.
Both exhibits open to the public on September 15th and will run until January 6th, 2020.
