After a pair of wins to start the U Sports Canada West women's soccer season, the UNBC Timberwolves felt the taste of defeat Saturday in Saskatoon, losing 3-1 to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Kalli Cowles and Hale Krynowsky each scored late in the opening half to stake the Huskies to a 2-0 lead.
Prince George Youth Soccer product Hannah Emmond got the T-wolves on the scoreboard at the 54:39 mark and it remained a 2-1 game until the 80th minute, when Maya Gabruch collected her fourth goal of the season, connecting on a long shot that beat goalie Madi Doyle.
Emmond's goal came off a free kick taken by Kenzie Chilcott. Huskies goalie Jadyn Steinhauer had trouble controlling the shot and it bounced high and Emmond was there to boot it out of the air for a highlight-reel goal, her first of the season.
Doyle made four saves in net for the T-wolves, while Steinhauer was forced to make three stops in the game. Saskatchewan managed seven shots on goal and the T-wolves were held to three.
“I’m proud of the girls for coming back into the game and continuing to work hard,” said Timberwolves head coach Neil Sedgwick, on canadawest.org. “They stuck to the game plan and it’s just showing that we are becoming more mature as a group, so that’s great to see.”
The win improved the Huskies' record to 3-0.
The T-wolves (2-1-0) will play Sunday afternoon inn Regina against the Cougars (0-1-2), who lost 4-0 Saturday at home to the Calgary Dinos.
The UNBC men (3-3-1), who knocked off the previously undefeated Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 Friday at Masich Place Stadium, will have a chance to rest up the rest of the weekend before they head to Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears next Saturday, then will take on the MacEwan Griffins on Sunday.
Alberta (1-3-1) was due to face the UBC-Okanagan Heat (5-1-1) tonight in Kelowna, while MacEwan (1-3-1) was matched with Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (1-1-3) in Kamloops.
