Hunters need to properly store their guns in their vehicles to avoid thefts, Prince George RCMP say.

Local police are already investigating several cases of reported thefts, where firearms were left overnight in vehicles.

"We understand that hunters want to get an early start to make the most of the day and the hunting season" Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson for the Prince George RCMP, said. "However, leaving hunting gear including guns in a vehicle attracts thieves and motivates them to the possibility of a good score. The prospect of stealing firearms is a pretty good motivator by itself, but thieves know even if there are no firearms, the reward is often thousands of dollars' worth of hunting gear."

Most of the reported thefts have happened in parking lots or near local hotels and motels, with the remainder happening in residential driveway.

Police are urging hunters to load firearms, ammunition and other valuables just before leaving, instead of leaving them in their vehicles overnight.

RCMP are asking the public to call in a suspected vehicle theft in progress and anyone with information about the thefts under investigation is asked to share those details directly with police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
