A series of controlled burns could produce plumes of smoke and flames large enough to be seen in Williams Lake, the B.C. Wildfire Service is advising.

Located in a 20-hectare area within the Williams Lake Community Forest, between Williams Creek Valley and Highway 20, the burns are scheduled to start as early as today and last until January 15, with the timing depending on site and weather conditions.

The aim is to decrease tree density and reduce accumulations of debris that could fuel a wildfire and to improve winter range for mule deer.
