VANCOUVER — Two young students at the University of British Columbia are dead following a single-vehicle collision early Sunday.
The male and female students, both 18 years old, were walking together on the sidewalk on Northwest Marine Drive at about 1:45 a.m. when a vehicle veered off the road and they were struck and killed, RCMP said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old male, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and released to appear in court at a later date.
Police have yet to determine if speed, alcohol or drugs are factors in the collision, RCMP said.
No names have been released.
UBC president Santa Ono said the school community is mourning the “awful” and “tragic” loss of the students.“It is difficult to comprehend and express the enormity of the loss of these two bright and promising young adults,” Ono said. “I expect more details will emerge in the coming days that may further deepen our sadness.”
Grief and counselling supports are being made available to students, he said.
Witnesses are being asked to come forward and contact Mounties, who are appealing for dash cam video of the crash. Contact them at 604-224-1322.
