Dockside Green residents have made a $500 donation to Community Micro Lending Society - proceeds from a month's worth of returnable cans and bottles. As part of the Upper Harbour community's innovative waste recycling program, Dockside Green volunteers cash in containers from bins in a dedicated recycling room. All of the refund proceeds go to non-profit organizations that advance social, environmental or economic sustainability - and over the last several months has included an Esquimalt teen group and an orphanage in South Africa. This month, volunteer Henry Dembicki chose the CML loan fund, which lends to sustainable businesses that cannot find financing elsewhere. For Dembicki, it's a win-win situation. He said the strata saves on recycling costs and the money targets local and global sustainability. "We liked the idea that our recycling dollars would help fund green entrepreneurs and then generate further spin-offs in the Victoria economy," he said.
