Realtors rally for food banks

Realtors from around Greater Victoria concluded their annual Food Drive last week, breaking previous years' contributions with nearly 1,000 kilograms of food valued at $5,350 as well as $3,933.78 in cash and cheques. "We received an outpouring of generosity from both the real-estate community and from the public," says Wendy Moreton, chairwoman of the Victoria Real Estate Board's Community Relations Committee. "This is our fourth food drive for Greater Victoria, and definitely our best result yet. I think people realize the need in Victoria is growing." According to Brent Palmer, food bank director for the Mustard Seed, more than 7,000 people now rely on food banks to get through each month.

"This contribution is very timely as the need is high and food supplies in our distribution warehouse are critically low," said Palmer. "Those helped by the Mustard Seed as well as the Sidney, Sooke and Goldstream food banks will benefit from this generous community support."
