Trudi Brown, a partner at the law firm of Brown, Henderson, Melbye in Victoria has won the Law Society of B.C.’s Excellence in Family Law Award.

Brown, who was called to the bar in 1974, was recognized along with other lawyers at the society’s annual awards dinner in Vancouver last week. She is a family law mediator and arbitrator.

“Trudi is a trailblazer in family law in this province. She has led by example through her passionate interest in the practice of family law, her innovation in the delivery of legal services and her dedication to the reform of family justice processes and legal education,” said Nancy Merrill, chair of the Law Society’s Excellence in Family Law Award selection committee.

VIHA receives procurement nod

The Vancouver Island Health Authority has been named one of seven organizations to win a B.C. Construction Association award for excellence in procurement.

It’s the first time the association has handed out awards for procurement, but association president Chris Atchison said it was time.

“Standing out for procurement professionalism amid the hundreds of public projects underway in B.C. is a significant achievement,” he said, adding that with contractors currently in high demand, procurement professionals are the key to successful project delivery.

The health authority was recognized for a variety of initiatives, including its use of electronic-bid submission, providing easy access to bid documents through B.C. Bid and BidCentral, and its response times to bidder inquiries.

Accounting firm to merge with MNP

Hulko Cameron Wellburn LLP, a Victoria-based accounting firm, will merge with MNP, effective Jan. 1.

MNP has 18 offices in B.C. and the firm’s strategic plan is calling for continued growth in the province.

“Since first opening in Victoria with a single team member in 2012, our office has grown rapidly to include a strong advisory practice, including team members specializing in public-sector consulting, technology consulting, cyber-security and personal insolvency. Joining forces with Hulko Cameron Wellburn more than doubles our Victoria team and adds the experienced accounting and tax professionals we were seeking to complement our existing Victoria practice,” said Darren Turchansky, MNP’s executive vice-president of the B.C. Region.

Founded in 1976, Hulko Cameron Wellburn is a mid-sized accounting firm serving owner-managed businesses, high-net-worth individuals and professionals.
