Six Mile Pub to reopen Monday
The oldest pub in British Columbia is turning the taps back on.
The Six Mile Pub, last shuttered 100 years ago during Prohibition and more recently because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will reopen on Monday to continue its 165-year legacy.
Publican David Wong wants to welcome back the regulars and others for a cold pint, something to eat and good company.
“Like it had done through two world wars, Prohibition and the Great Depression, this historic pub will once again emerge a little stronger, a little more determined and a lot more steadfast in her commitment to her community,” said Wong, calling the Six Mile the “living room of the community.”
New PR director for advocate group
Kerry Slavens will be the director of public relations and engagement as of June 22 for the South Island Prosperity Partnership.
Slavens has been serving as the editor-in-chief of the Douglas, Yam and Spruce magazines for Page One. Prior to that, she was a co-owner of Artemis PR + Design.
Slavens is taking over from Bruce Williams. Williams is the incoming chief executive of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.
Golf simulator firm opens near Uptown
Derek Orr has opened Iron & Wood Golf Simulators at 3453 Saanich Rd., across from Uptown shopping centre. It has three private simulation rooms that each feature 84 championship courses and 12 multisport games that range from hockey and baseball to zombie dodgeball.
New president for running association
Ulla Hansen was elected president of the Victoria International Cross Country Association.
Coming off a successful staging of the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championships at Bear Mountain Resort in Langford in February, the society’s mandate is to organize and promote cross-country events in Victoria from the regional level up to international competition.
Hansen is a 27-time Canadian national championship medalist and represented Canada seven times at the World Cross Country Championships.
The board also includes vice-president Christopher Kelsall; secretary Julien Marceau and treasurer Paul Siluch. Directors are Lori Chestnut, Bruce Deacon, Gary Duncan, Jonathan Foweraker, Louise Hodgson-Jones, Tom Michell, Bob Reid and Keith Wells.
With running competitions on hold because of COVID-19, there are no immediate competitions on the horizon for VICCA, but a long-term goal is to bid on the 2023 or 2025 World Athletics Cross Country Championship.
