The Canadian Tourism College is opening a new campus in Victoria. The school, which offers flight attendant and tourism training in Vancouver and Surrey, will start offering courses at its small Victoria campus this fall.
Director of marketing David Chua said there will be room for as many as 25 students in Victoria, while the Vancouver campus will be doubling in size at the same time. The school said there is a growing need for trained staff in the industry, as the Tourism Industry Association of B.C. estimates there will be 100,000 tourism-related employees needed by 2020.
The college will offer certificate and diploma programs in both hospitality and travel and tourism. Through a partnership with Royal Roads University, the credentials will be transferable into BA programs in international hotel management and global tourism.
The school will be having an open house Aug. 15 between 5 and 7 p.m. at its new campus, 850 Courtney St.
Food eco district expands downtown
The city’s Food Eco District has expanded with an additional 10 planter boxes in the downtown core.
The new boxes, filled with herbs and greens including rosemary, oregano, lemon thyme, basil, mint, lettuce, and strawberries, mean there is an additional 50 square feet of urban garden space downtown.
The FED, which has a mission to turn a few blocks of downtown into a district that showcases local food and sustainability, planted the boxes last month at local food businesses, including Yalla, Olive the Senses, Whole Foods’ Fin & Pearl eatery, and Prima Strada. FED also worked with Foo Asian Street Food to transform a previously under-used patch of dirt next to their patio into a raised bed.
The initiative was funded with $5,000 from a My Great Neighbourhoods Grant from the City of Victoria, and contributions from FED restaurants and LifeSpace Gardens, which built the planter boxes.
Cascadia expands
Cascadia Liquor will open its seventh location with the addition of a mid-Island store at Nanoose Bay this fall.
The 3,000 square foot store will be located in the commercial district of Nanoose Bay alongside Quality Foods, Coastal Community Credit Union and Medicine Centre Pharmacy.
“We are excited to grow our Vancouver Island presence to reach new communities that are looking for an elevated shopping experience specializing in local products," said Don Calveley, founder of the Truffles Group. “In addition to Island-produced beers, wines, ciders and spirits, we'll carry all the traditional favourites and offer outstanding service and industry expertise on selection.”
