The City of Victoria has decided to make its Capital Mission — an invitation to companies from around the country and the U.S. to check out the city — an annual event.
“This first mission was overwhelmingly successful. We wanted to attract investors and showcase Victoria as an innovative, creative and livable tech hub and tourist destination. We did this, and more,” said Mayor Lisa Helps. “The follow-up meetings and business generated speaks for itself. Our hosted guests will be back, and they’ll recommend Victoria to their networks.”
In February, the city played host to companies from Washington, California and across Canada
During the visit, a total of 295 contacts were made, 156 face-to-face business meetings were held and 88 qualified business leads were generated.
The visitors were also immersed in Discover Tectoria, which generated nearly 100 more follow-up discussions.
“Having never been to Victoria before, I did not know what to expect. What I found was a jewel in Canada’s start-up crown,” said Leonard Lanzi, executive director of the Los Angeles Venture Association. “Together with an enthusiastic city, a venture and angel capital network, a first-class university, and lots of creative and innovative people, there is a recipe for a vibrant startup ecosystem.”
The next mission is scheduled for spring 2017.
Consultants merging
TallSky Consulting has joined Chemistry Consulting to form the largest human resources services business on the Island. The combination of the firms is intended to provide expanded services for clients requiring executive search, staff recruitment, outsourcing, placement services and various projects. “I am thrilled that the joining of our two teams of HR professionals will bring a unique depth of knowledge and a comprehensive list of services to our clients,” said TallSky principal Eileen Harper. The companies expect they will be able to capitalize on complementary strengths — Chemistry, as a leader in business consulting, conference management, and international recruitment and TallSky’s success as an experienced HR consulting firm.
That’s the spirit
Three Island spirits hit the spot at last weekend’s B.C. Distilled 2016 festival in Vancouver. Duncan’s Ampersand Distilling’s Gin and Per Se Vodka were voted audience favourites out of 100 products sampled. The third Island spirit to get an appreciative nod from the crowd was Merridale Craft Spirits’ Stairs Pear Brandy.
