The Family Business Association of Vancouver Island has named Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort as its 2020 Family Business Excellence Award winner.

The resort near the Broughton Archipeligo off the north Island has been owned by Craig and Deborah Murray for 40 years. It edged out Ladysmith’s 49th Parallel Grocery for the top honour. The entire Murray family has been involved in the resort over the years including children Fraser, Clifton and Georgia Murray.

The resort started as a fishing lodge in 1981 and has since grown into an eco-tourism operation with 60 employees. Fraser Murray and his partner, Becky, took over operations in 2011.

The Family Business Association also named Erin Boggs, owner of Robinson’s Outdoor Store, as the recipient of this year’s Young Entrepreneur Award. Robinson’s Outdoor Store started more than 90 years ago.

In 2017, Boggs stepped in to run the company, taking over from her mother, Gayle Robinson. Boggs is the fourth generation of the family to run the downtown retailer.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Union Club Feb. 12.
