A ground-breaking ceremony to start of construction on a nine-storey, 172-room hotel in downtown Nanaimo is set for Jan. 29. The 10 a.m. event will be held at 100 Gordon St.

Utah-based developer PEG Companies said project updates will be provided on the hotel, to be called Nanaimo Courtyard by Marriott.

Construction began on the property in late December after several delays. Nanaimo sold the site to PEG to get a hotel that would enhance the adjacent Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
