The first tenants in the expanded Mayfair Shopping Centre will start getting access to their units in early April.

The tenants will tailor their spaces to suit their needs and are lined up to open this fall, Laura Poland, centre manager, said on Monday.

She was not revealing any names of the retailers, saying it is up to the individual tenants to make the announcements.

Poland said the aim is to increase fashion and lifestyle offerings, as well as restaurant use. Well over half the new space is spoken for, she added.

The Mayfair Shopping Centre is undergoing a $72-million expansion. Work includes adding 100,000 square feet of new retail space to create a total of 544,000 square feet.

About 400 new parking spots are being developed in two levels above the new structure facing Douglas Street. A new parking lot access will be built at the Finlayson Street side of the site.

Once complete, there will be elevators and escalators in four locations, allowing shoppers to reach rooftop parking.

“The project is coming along very nicely,” Poland said.

A construction milestone has been reached now that the pre-fabricated structure facing Douglas Street has been completed, she said.

“They were going great guns through the month of December.”

Local crews, with contractor PCL, will be formally putting it together and installing outside finishings. It’s right on track, Poland said.

The Douglas side of the building consists of prefabricated cement structures that are built elsewhere and trucked to the centre, Poland said. “It’s put together with those big cranes, just like a puzzle.”

Crews “pour cement and tie it all together,” she said.

“It quite significant and it certainly is different to see in terms of our landscape on Douglas Street.”
