Gordon Denford, founder and chairman of Berwick Retirement Communities, was presented with the inaugural B.C. Senior Living Association Pioneer Award, in recognition of his contribution and positive impact to the senior-living industry.

Denford founded the company in 1989, after 36 years in the construction business. His first retirement building opened in Gordon Head in 1989 with a vision of a residence that could comfort as well as house seniors.

His goal had been to eliminate the retirement-home stigma by establishing residences with a sense of harmony, comfort and familiarity. There are also Berwick communities in Qualicum, Royal Oak, Campbell River, Comox, Nanaimo and Kamloops.
