The Langford Volunteer Fire Department put out a house fire on Sooke Road on Sunday afternoon.

The blaze broke out about 3 p.m. at the rear of a home at 2740 Sooke Rd.

“When I first came around the corner, I thought it was a backyard burn,” said Langford Fire deputy chief Kerry Zado.

He saw a fire on the back deck that had breached a window and was burning in the attic.

“We contained it mainly to the outside,” said Zado. “We knocked it down pretty quick before it got to the roof.”

Damage was contained to the back door, window and rear attic and is valued at about $50,000.

The 1,400-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath bungalow has housed a licensed daycare.

The family was not home and firefighters evacuated pets from the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
