After 21 years downtown, Chapters will be moving to the Mayfair Shopping Centre in late fall.

After 21 years, Chapters bookstore will leave downtown Victoria at summer’s end to move north to the Mayfair Shopping Centre, where it will be rebranded as Indigo.

A large Indigo sign has already been erected at Mayfair, which is completing a $72-million expansion to add 100,000 square feet of retail space, for a total of 544,000 square feet, and adding about 400 new parking spaces.

“Chapters Victoria will be closing late summer with Indigo Mayfair opening this fall,” Kate Gregory, spokeswoman for parent company Indigo Books and Music Inc., said in an email Tuesday.

Existing Chapters staff will be working in the new location, she said.

The Indigo store will reflect “our new store concept showcasing a warm and modern esthetic where customers can explore the best in books, beautiful and exclusive in-house designed lifestyle products and must-have specialty brands.”

Chapters opened Aug. 20, 1997, with 100,000 books in 30,000 square feet of space in the former Woolworth’s store in the 1200 block of Douglas Street.

The three-level store, with an in-house Starbucks café, sells not only books but games, toys, housewares and more.
