The View Street building that houses the longest continuously running jazz club in Canada is for sale at $4.5 million.

Hermann’s Jazz Club and the neighbouring View Street Social Club, in a building at 751 View St. and 753 View St., are among the businesses included in the sale. The live music venue and pub have 13,824 square feet of operating space and a total capacity of 630 seats. The listing also includes three liquor licences and one food- primary licence.

Hermann’s Jazz Club has been run since July by the Arts On View Society, which signed a five-year lease on the club with the estate of the late Hermann Nieweler. “I’m confident the way we have it structured, the club is secure for a period of time,” said Stephan Nieweler, one of three Nieweler children who own the building. “That was important to me. Whatever a new owner would do, I can’t predict. But we have it structured so the club is going to be there for some time. We’re looking for the right offer. But we’ll see what happens. It’s hard to predict.”

The popular club has supported the local jazz community and showcased touring artists such as Diana Krall, Michael Bublé, and Wynton Marsalis during the early part of their careers.

It has remained a foundation of the live music community in Victoria since it was opened in 1981.

Bill Turner, chairman of Arts On View, would like to see that run continue. “If there’s an investor that wants to sit back and make income from this, we could have a very good arrangement for the next five or 10 years,” he said. “If we have a landlord buy it that doesn’t want to keep it going, we could have some troubles.”
