More than 1,300 piglets have been euthanized on a Manitoba farm after provincial investigators found them to be in severe distress. The province said in a statement its chief veterinarian's office responded to a complaint on Friday in western Manitoba. The initial inspection found approximately 1,300 piglets that it euthanized in order "to avoid further pain and suffering." Doug Chorney of Keystone Agricultural Producers, an organization that represents farmers in Manitoba, said troubles in the pork industry mean weanlings are now essentially worthless. Chorney said he fears there may be similar stories from desperate producers who are telling him they can't afford to feed their animals anymore.
