Ladysmith is pulling the plug on its popular Festival of Lights activities this year, but the lights that draw so many visitors to the town will shine on.
The society that operates the Christmas-lighting spectacle said due to risks surrounding the ongoing pandemic, light-up activities scheduled for Nov. 25 won’t happen this year.
“This decision to cancel Light Up for this year has been made with a view toward our responsibilities to this community,” the group said. “Potentially, the health of our members, various service groups, the many volunteers and our community could be placed at risk by staging a large public gathering.”
Lights and rooftop decorations will be placed during October and November by small groups. The lights will be turned on in late November for the public.
Meanwhile, the Peninsula Celebrations Society has cancelled the Sparkles Christmas Parade, saying the event won’t happen “out of an abundance of caution surrounding COVID-19.”
