Island Health reports 53 new COVID-19 cases, 430 people ill in region

B.C. reported 641 new cases of COVID-19 in the province, including 53 in Island Health, on Tuesday.

There are 5,357 known active cases in B.C. and 138 people in hospital. Seventy-eight of those are in intensive care.

Interior Health is undergoing a large outbreak and continues to record the highest number of new daily cases — 273 new cases Tuesday for a total of 2,054 active cases.

Island Health has 430 active cases.

From Aug. 9 to 22, unvaccinated people accounted for 70.2 per cent of new COVID-19 cases and 77.7 per cent of hospitalizations.

Seventy-five per cent of eligible B.C. residents over age 12 have now been fully vaccinated.

No new deaths were reported Tuesday. Sixteen deaths, including one in Island Health, were reported over the weekend, bringing the total to date to 1,801.

There 12 active outbreaks in long-term care, assisted and independent living and acute care. None are in Island Health.
