The B.C. Conservation Service is asking people to stay away from the Kootowis Creek area near Tofino after an angler was knocked off his feet by a bear.
“A man was fishing in the creek, near the intersection of Alaska Pines Road and Kennedy River Road, when a black bear approached from behind,” the office said on social media.
The bear knocked over the man on Oct. 15.
The fisherman was not injured and scared the bear away.
Conservation officers are posting signs to warn the public and will monitor the area.
This is feeding time for B.C. bears, as they work to fatten up before winter hibernation. Salmon are among their favourite foods and the Kootowis creek is known as a prime fishing spot for salmon and trout.
So far this year, eight bears have been destroyed in the Tofino area because they lost their fear of humans and were scavenging for food in residential areas.
The Conservation Office is seeing higher numbers of human-bear conflicts.
