A man beaten with baseball bats had little to say to police and wound up in jail on charges of assaulting his girlfriend, RCMP Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell said.

A man beaten with baseball bats had little to say to police and wound up in jail on charges of assaulting his girlfriend, RCMP Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell said.

Police received a report of five men with bats taking part in the beating outside a hotel in the 1800 block of the Trans Canada Highway at about 1:35 a.m. on Wednesday.

They took off in a vehicle before Mounties could arrive, Bethell said.

One of the five was found in the hotel and a second is in custody pending an appearance in court.

The victim of the beating suffered minor injuries, but faces charges of assault and breaching conditions in connection with the earlier assault on his girlfriend.

"It is believed that the two events are linked and that the individuals know each other," Bethell said.
