In fewer than 10 years we reach a tipping point and enter an unknown future. As a mother and scientist, I feel the urge of becoming active to secure my two-year-old son’s future.

A few days ago, I became aware of the Global Climate Strike and I searched the Fridays For Future Map for an event happening in Powell River. As none were registered, I decided to sign up and fight for my son’s future. Although it was organized in such a short time, I received calls from people I’ve never met who wanted to join and lots of mom-friends decided to join.

Standing in the sun and waving on Marine Avenue, we were given lots of positive feedback and honks, which encouraged us to found a “Fridays For Future Powell River” Facebook group to meet with like-minded people. There are so many groups in Powell River being active to secure our children’s future by protecting old-growth forest (Climbers’Access and Development Powell River Group/Arc’teryx documentation), primary forest (Shirley Valley Untouched Old Growth) or fighting for a pesticide-free Powell River.

This newly formed Fridays For Future group should be a platform for all Powell Riverites to share their climate actions and solutions, and keep each other informed. We will continue raising awareness once a month to keep reminding people that our future starts now.
