Re: “Directors wrestle with wood pileup at landfill,” Aug. 2.
As a frequent visitor to the landfill for wood, I first want to thank all the wonderful staff. They are unfailingly polite and cheerful. While the size of the woodpile is a problem, I agree with director Donna McMahon that it should be seen as a resource. I have heard people saying they have built entire garden sheds from the pile. Mr. Kumar mentioned the liability issue, a valid point; however, unless I’m coming at the wrong time, I can say I have never seen people climbing over it. This would effectively end public access as happened recently with the glass section when some people thought it would be fun to smash windows. Mr. Kumar also mentioned increased traffic congestion as more people gather from the woodpile. Isn’t this an opportunity to capitalize on? A few years ago, there seemed to be more staff that were removing hardware from the wood and more separation of treated wood, “clean” wood, etc. I would not have a problem paying for wood I took if that paid for more staff so that the woodpile could be managed in an environmentally responsible manner.
