Last week’s paper advised that Sechelt will be proceeding with straightening an old S-curve on Trail Avenue under the Hydro-line for $6 million (“Sechelt Briefs”). This project should be cancelled and instead this money should be set aside in an ongoing fund for any dollars needed further up the road at Seawatch. The S-curve in question is quite scenic, has served its purpose since day one, slows vehicles, and is perfectly adequate for the volume of traffic now and in the foreseeable future.
A small fraction of this money would reopen the Seawatch neighbourhood. Filling any voids under the roads at Seawatch with shot-rock is a cheap and effective solution – the rock both supports the road and provides passage of subsurface water. Such an ad-hoc approach is the best practical way of handling the current situation. The only certainty in this matter is the uncertainty of further problems. What can be done differently, which was not done up to now, is to monitor the area on an annual basis with instruments that can detect problems before they become serious.
This mayor and council don’t seem to realize that with every one of the multiple approval steps in a new development, the Town assumes further legal responsibility for the outcome. They make a rash decision to drive people from their homes and then continue to dig themselves deeper down a rabbit hole. They are stubbornly going down a road that is providing a solution to no one including the taxpayers.
