The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
Tsawwassen
Sept. 9, 9:09 a.m., 5400-block of 14B Avenue: Police were called to a report of a stolen vehicle. The registered owner advised the vehicle was parked in his driveway with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition. There was no indication of forced entry.
Sept. 11, 6 p.m., 1300-block of View Crescent: Police were called to a theft from a vehicle. The owner had called police when he found $12 in change missing along with $700 in tools that were in the vehicle. The owner believes the doors may have been unlocked due to issues with the locks. The vehicle had no indication of forced entry.
Sept. 13, 5:49 p.m., 1100-block of Skana Drive: Police were called to a male in his vehicle who was believed to be under the influence of drugs. Another caller reported to police seeing the same male slouched over the wheel parked outside a business. Upon police arrival, the male was seen smoking a suspected illegal drug. The driver exhibited slurred speech, lethargic movements and glazed over eyes. The driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and was taken to the police station for further examination.
Sept. 13, 2:30 p.m., 300-block of 54A Street: Police were dispatched to a report of an ongoing issue with a vehicle speeding through a neighbourhood with a loud muffler. The vehicle was not in the area upon police arrival but officers did send out a warning letter to the address of the registered owner’s home.
Sept. 13, 10 a.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Police observed a person walk out of a liquor store and pour a silver canned liquid into a clear shaker bottle. A traffic stop was conducted where the driver admitted to mixing vodka with Diet Coke with the intent to drink while driving. A breath sample was given but the driver blew a zero. The driver agreed to pour out the contents. The driver was given a violation ticket for having open liquor in a motor vehicle. As the driver has previous criminal charges related to impaired driving, a file was created to document the intent to drink while driving at 10 a.m.
Sept. 14, 9:25 p.m., 18th Avenue and 56th Street: A traffic stop was conducted of a vehicle to check for driver sobriety. The driver was witnessed stopping approximately 10 metres behind the stop line at a red light. During the traffic stop the driver had admitted to consuming two glasses of wine three hours previously. A breath sample was taken in which the driver failed. A 90-day immediate roadside prohibition was issued to the driver and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver left the area via taxi.
Ladner
Sept. 9, 1:55 a.m., 5400-block of Highway 17A: Police were conducting a sobriety roadblock when a driver approached with a distinct odour of liquor on their breath. The driver was observed to have glossy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. A breath sample was taken in which the driver failed and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the driver was taken home by police.
Sept. 13, 3:33 p.m., Highway 99 and 72nd Street: Police were conducting stationary speed enforcement when a vehicle drove past at a high rate of speed. Speed was verified by radar at 154 km/h. A traffic stop was made and the vehicle was impounded for seven days for excessive speed. The driver was also issued an excessive speeding violation ticket and was picked up by a friend from the scene.
Sept. 13, 3:46 p.m.: Complainant advised that he posted an Auto Trader ad for his used SUV, and received interest from a potential buyer, who advised a cheque would be sent to cover the cost of purchase and shipping. Complainant received a cheque for $1,200 more than the purchase price, and was advised to deposit it and e-transfer the “accidental” overpayment to the buyer. Complainant was advised by bank that the cheque was fraudulent. No monetary loss.
Sept. 13, 9:27 p.m., Evergreen Lane: Police were called to a residence after being advised that the complainant had lost his wallet, couldn’t attend the bank until the next day and had no food. Complainant has disability and required assistance. Police brought him a meal from a local restaurant.
Sept. 14, 8:15 a.m., Deas Island Road and River Road: Police attended a call to a trail near Deas Island Regional Park where it was suspected that theft of wires had taken place. Complainant found a makeshift ladder and tools along the path. Police arrived on scene and found that approximately 150 metres of fiber optic cable had been cut down from the telephone poles. Police advised utility company of theft.
