Metro to explain Delta reservoir project traffic impact

Metro Vancouver is hosting an open house on a plan to build a new water reservoir in North Delta.

The regional district says that to meet the growing demand for drinking water in Delta, a plan is in the works to expand the existing concrete reservoir located at 8554-116th Street, a facility called the Hellings Reservoir.

The Hellings Reservoir Project is scheduled to start construction in 2020 and includes a new above-ground reservoir beside the existing reservoir, two underground valve chambers, a new water main that will connect the new reservoir to the regional drinking water system and three smaller underground valve chambers.

Metro Vancouver notes it owns and operates numerous water reservoirs across the region, including natural reservoirs at each of the three water sources (Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam) that store raw water collected from watersheds, and over 20 in-system storage reservoirs that store treated drinking water that is ready to be used by homes and businesses.

A Delta staff memo to council notes Metro staff have completed “high-impact stakeholder meetings” with individual residents bordering the site, as well as a group meeting.

As the project is now at the 90 per cent design stage, Metro is hosting a final open house to show the public the renderings of the reservoir, landscape plans, traffic plans and anticipated construction impacts, as well as mitigation measures.

The open house is planned to take place in a tent at the reservoir site on 116th Street tomorrow, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In the event of inclement weather, a location change to an indoor venue may occur

Metro is scheduled to finalize the design by the end of December.
