Despite biting winds, the Millennium Trail at Captain’s Cove played host to a display of 500 pumpkins that attracted more than 1,000 visitors for Halloween.
For the second year, students at Neilson Grove Elementary students were joined by Port Guichon Elementary, Holly Elementary, Delta Secondary and C&S Daycare in creating an exhibit of pumpkin creativity.
The evening exhibit was enhanced with live music, visitors in costume, a scavenger hunt and hot chocolate.
A special focus for the night included a successful food drive for the South Delta Food Bank. Visitors were encouraged to drop their donation into a haunted van, quickly filling over 20 boxes of non-perishable food and cash donations totalling $275.
Michael Lepore of organizing sponsor Lepore & Associates says the event has a simple goal: “Create a free community event supporting student participation. Naturally, sponsorship and volunteers help with the costs, but the creativity and excitement come from students, helpers, families and participating organizations. Everyone made a huge effort and we’re really excited to recognize the student contributions by presenting each school with an Outstanding Community Participation award.”
Supporters of this year’s event included Captain’s Cove Marina, Polygon, Royal LePage Regency Realty, Westham Island Herb Farm and Rod Swenson Farms.
“We’re all looking forward to next year,” says Lepore, “The date is set for Friday, Oct. 23, 2020.”
