One good thing about writing? It can be easily done while in self-isolation.

The Royal City Literary Arts Society has extended the deadline for its 2020 Write On! contest. Initially slated to close on April 1, the contest has now been extended to May 1 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The contest welcomes submissions in three categories: non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Non-fiction and fiction entries can be a maximum of 1,500 words, while poetry has a maximum of one page, single-spaced.

Cash prizes of $150, $100 and $75 are awarded for the top three entries in each category, and three honourable mentions are also named. Winners and honourable mentions will be published in the society’s e-zine, Wordplay at Work.

The contest accepts a maximum of three submissions per person in total (combined in any or all categories).

All submissions are anonymous; send your entry with a cover letter that includes your name, address, email, phone number, category, title and payment option.

You can choose to pay by Paypal at www.rclas.com, or you can mail a cheque or money order to Royal City Literary Arts Society, Box 308, 720 Sixth St., New Westminster, V3L 3C5. In both cases, email your entry and cover letter to writeon@rclas.com (do not send hard copies of entries in the mail).

The deadline is May 1, and a winners’ reading event is to be announced at a later date.

For further information, email writeon@rclas.com or see www.rclas.com.
