The New Westminster artist is showing his work in Island Paintings: Landscapes of British Columbia, running Sept. 12 to 25 at the Visual Space Gallery in Vancouver.

“My mother’s mother came from the Greek island of Naxos. Perhaps this is why I love islands and deeply enjoy travelling the interstitial waters between them by ferry or small boat,” Haughton says in a write-up about the show.

“Work on the British Columbia island paintings began over a decade ago, but I can trace their true origin back to 1975, voyaging alone for the first time, free camping on a ridge overlooking the Aegean and its many islands, experiencing the joy and wonder of the dawn. With backpack and by bicycle I have explored most of the Greek islands, and I’m working my way around those of British Columbia – Quadra Island in particular, but also Saturna, Mayne, Salt Spring, Galiano, Hornby, Denman and Read.”

An opening reception is set for Saturday, Sept. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m., and an artist’s talk, Island Magic: Paintings and Poetry, is set for Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.

The exhibition is open noon to 5 p.m. daily. Visual Space Gallery is at 3352 Dunbar St.
