The Vagabond Players are offering up a new production that’s billed as “a witty and provocative look at faith, commitment and unconditional love.”

Next Fall is on at the Bernie Legge Theatre from April 2 to 25.

Playwright Geoffrey Nauffts tells the story of a gay couple’s loving but turbulent five-year relationship in Manhattan. Its central story focuses on the relationship between Adam and Luke – but, at the same time, it goes beyond a typical love story. When an accident changes everything, Adam, a lifelong atheist, must lean on Luke’s family and friends for support and answers.

James Mainguy and Trevor Hamer star as Adam and Luke – the former a witty and charming substitute teacher; the latter an aspiring actor, who’s still in the closet and considers his homosexuality his “one big sin.”

Luke’s flamboyant and free-spirited mother is played by Denise Brookson, while Dave Simcox takes the role of his hardline, conservative religious father. The cast is rounded out by Mary Adams as Holly, a bohemian candle shop owner who is Adam’s closest friend, and Drew Hart as Brandon, a property developer who was once Luke’s best friend.

Directed by Wayne Nolan, the timely American play forces its audience to examine what it means to “believe” – and what it might cost us not to. It was nominated in 2010 for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards.

Audiences are warned of coarse language and mature subject matter.

Next Fall is onstage Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park.

Tickets are $17, or $15 for seniors and youth, with $12 previews on April 2 and 3.
