New West teens invited to enjoy Art in the Park

If you’re a teenager who’s been itching to get out and do something fun again, this one’s for you.

The Arts Council of New Westminster is offering up a new Art in the Park workshop series from Aug. 10 to 14.

The workshops will give teens in grades 9 through 11 a chance to get creative and explore new artistic skills. It will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at various parks across the city.

“With many programs and services for teens being cancelled this summer, these outdoor workshops present a fun opportunity for teens to socialize with peers while experimenting with their artistic side,” says a press release about the workshops.

The August Art in the Park series will focus on drawing.

Local artist and art instructor Jason Wright will guide teens through various drawing styles and techniques. No experience is required, and organizers says the workshops will be presented in a “relaxed and welcoming” environment.

All supplies will be included, and students will have the chance to work with charcoal, smudging tools and other drawing materials.

Each class will have 30 minutes of instruction, followed by time in the park to put new skills to practice.

Teens are welcome to attend one, some or all of the workshops.

No registration is required, and there are no fees to join.

Those who want to take part should look for the Arts Council of New Westminster tent at the Queen’s Park Skatepark on Monday, Aug. 10 and Tuesday, Aug. 11. It will be at Moody Park on Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 14. On Thursday, Aug. 14, it will be at Ryall Park in Queensborough.

The press release notes that the Arts Council of New Westminster has worked closely with the city to ensure that Art in the Park meets COVID-19 guidelines and that the health and safety of participants has been carefully considered.
